CURRENT EXHIBIT “Once Upon a Time: The Stories of the Brothers Grimm and Washington Irving”. The McVickar House (The History Center, home of the historical society), is transformed into an enchanted forest with re-creations of classic fairy tales from “Little Red Riding Hood” to “Rip Van Winkle” as guests explore the writers’ lives and works. The exhibit is the result of years of extensive research by Dr. Erik Weiselberg, Irvington resident and scholar of both European and U.S. History, revealing for the first time how the Grimms and Irving were transatlantic kindred spirits, even if they never met. The exhibit chronicles major influences on their parallel lives and how those events shaped their stories and tales. Visitors of all ages will enjoy traveling through time, exploring the writers’ childhoods and native lands, learning about the source material for their famous tales, experiencing the stories firsthand in the Enchanted Forest, examining their political action, seeing how their stories have been adapted at the movie theater, and much more.
